  2. Schnuerle scavenging (sometimes called "loop scavenging" or "reverse scavenging") is a design used by most modern valveless two-stroke engines. The key difference compared to crossflow scavenging is that the transfer ports are located either side of the exhaust port and aimed at the opposite cylinder wall.

Loop flow scavenging: The exhaust and air inlet ports are arranged around the boundary of lower end of the cylinder liner. In loop scavenging engines, the exhaust ports are placed on top of the inlet ports on same side. Incoming air passes transversely over the piston is forced to leave through exhaust ports.

Loop Scavenging is the gas exchange process in which he charge air passes over the piston crown and rises to form a loop within the cylinder, expelling exhaust gases through exhaust ports cut in the same side of the liner above the scavenge ports.

This loading process, called loop scavenging, is the simplest known method of replacing the exhaust products with a fresh mixture and creating a cycle with only compression and power strokes.

The Loop type scavenging is similar to the cross type of scavenging but has only difference that the inlet and exhaust ports are present on the same side of the cylinder. In this type also the exhaust port is located above the inlet port, and is the first one to be opened by the downward movement of the piston.

How does loop scavenging work?As the piston moves further down, it opens the inlet port to let the newly charged air enter the cylinder for the next cycle. Loop scavenging is almost the same as the cross-flow, the only difference they have is that on loop scavenging, the exhaust and inlet ports are located on the same side.
What is the difference between cross flow and loop scavenging?Loop scavenging is almost the same as the cross-flow, the only difference they have is that on loop scavenging, the exhaust and inlet ports are located on the same side. The exhaust ports are still located higher than the inlet port and will be opened first as the piston moves downward.
Who invented loop scavenging?Often referred to as "Schnuerle" (or "Schnürle") loop scavenging after Adolf Schnürle, the German inventor of an early form in the mid-1920s, it became widely adopted in that country during the 1930s and spread further afield after World War II . Loop scavenging is the most common type of fuel/air mixture transfer used on modern two-stroke engines.
What are the different types of loop scavenging port arrangements?Other types of loop scavenging port arrangements include the Schnuerle type and the Curtis type. Loop scavenging was important for large MAN and Sulzer two-stroke engines (with stroke to bore ratios of about 2) until the 1980s .

    Scavenging (engine) - Wikipedia

Modern two-stroke engines use either Schnuerle scavenging (also known as "loop scavenging") or uniflow scavenging. The scavenge or scavenging port refers to that port through which clean air enters the cylinder, the exhaust port through which the combustible mix leaves. See more
