A bursa is a closed, fluid-filled sac that works as a cushion and gliding surface to reduce friction between tissues of the body. The major bursae (this is the plural of bursa) are located next to the tendons near the large joints, such as in the shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees.

The bursa of the pelvis is a cystic space in the connective tissue of the pelvic region. It is a closed capsule composed of endothelial cells. The inner wall was synovial with a small amount of synovial fluid. A few are connected to the joint and are located between the apophyses, tendons, muscles, and skin near the joint. Bursa may be present where friction or pressure is high and mainly facilitates sliding, thereby reducing or avoiding friction and compression between the apophysis and soft tissue near the joint. Many joint lesions can cause infectious bursitis in the pelvic region.

What is a bursa in the musculoskeletal system?Bursae are sac-like structures lined with synovial fluid. They are found in friction-prone locations in the musculoskeletal system, such as bony prominences and areas surrounding tendons and ligaments. They ensure smooth movement by creating a physiologic cushion between adjacent tissues and structures.
Where do bursae occur?Bursae occur at sites of shearing in subcutaneous tissue or between deeper tissues such as muscle groups and fascia. Many bursae develop during growth, but new or adventitious bursae can occur at sites of occupational friction. Bursae are found around most major joints of the body, such as the shoulder and the knee.
