    Costochondritis is defined as an inflammation of the cartilage that connects the ribs to the sternum. The causes of this are trauma, excess coughing, and infections. The treatment of acute costochondritis is nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like diclofenac, naproxen, or ibuprofen, for severe pain narcotic drugs like tramadol and Ultram can be used, other medicines required are gabapentin and amitriptyline to treat the acute pain. Other remedies are hot or cold compresses, rest, topical analgesic gel, or spray application, physical therapy, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation therapy.
