  2. The growth of these deep-sea nodules —metallic lumps of manganese, iron, and other metals found in all the major ocean basins—is one of the slowest known geological processes. These ringed concretions, which are potential sources of rare-earth and other critical elements, grow on average just 10 to 20 millimeters every million years.

Scattered across the abyssal plain are trillions of polymetallic nodules, potato-sized rocklike deposits containing minerals such as magnesium, nickel, copper, zinc, and cobalt.

Polymetallic nodules, also called manganese nodules, are mineral concretions on the sea bottom formed of concentric layers of iron and manganese hydroxides around a core. As nodules can be found in vast quantities, and contain valuable metals, deposits have been identified as a potential economic interest.

In marine geology, more specifically, the term usually refers to manganese nodules, a mineral type that forms by accreting in concentric layers around a fragment of some other rock or biological material, called a nucleus. When a manganese nodule is cut in half, the circular layers around the nucleus are reminiscent of tree rings.

Nodule formation means there is an abnormal proliferation of cells/tissues in your body. It can appear anywhere in the body from head to toe. Be it skin, just beneath the skin, deeper tissues or internal organs. Various factors stimulate this. Any abnormal insult to the cells/tissues can lead to the release of certain chemical messengers and proteins that could lead to nodule formation. Sometimes, the nodule can be non-cancerous (benign) or cancerous (malignant). Hence one should have a regular follow-up depending on the size, shape and size of the nodule formation.

What are the different types of deep-sea nodule resources?Development Status The worldwide development programs for deep-sea nodule resources are mainly divided into four categories: towed bucket type, continuous bucket rope type, automatic shuttle boat type, and pipeline-lifting type.
What is deep sea polymetallic nodule mining? The deep-sea polymetallic nodule-mining area is far away from the land, the nodules are distributed in the deep seabed, and the cost of offshore mining is high. At the same time, the polymetallic nodule is a two-dimensional deposit, and the substrate is thin and soft.
