When did motion pictures start? The concept of motion pictures predates the invention of the first “film” as we understand it today. Early experiments in motion pictures date back to the 19th century, with various inventors and researchers making contributions to the development of motion capture and projection technologies.
When did moving images become entertainment? The concept of moving images as entertainment was not a new one by the latter part of the 19th century. Magic lanterns and other devices had been employed in popular entertainment for generations. Magic lanterns used glass slides with images which were projected. The use of levers and other contrivances made these images "move".
Where did moving pictures come from?[Illustration] The technological roots of moving pictures can be traced to the camera obscura—a roomsize pinhole camera which projects an upside-down view of an exterior scene on an opposite interior wall. [Illustration] The principles of this device were first recorded in the 11th century in Egypt by Ibn al Haitam.
How did motion pictures become a technology?Motion pictures combined three earlier technologies. Early nineteenth-century experimenters knew how to make drawings appear to move, by passing them rapidly before the eye. Magic lanterns and shadow puppets were ways to project silhouettes onto a wall or screen.
