  3. A dental bridge is a device which is used as a replacement for missing teeth. It consists of a false tooth – known as a ‘pontic’ which is flanked by two crowns. The pontic slots neatly into a gap left by a missing teeth whilst the two crowns fit over teeth on each side of the pontic. The bridge is held in place with bands or dental cement.

A dental bridge is essentially just a false tooth to replace a missing one. The reason it is called a bridge is because it is anchored in place against two crowns on either side. These crowns then attach to the existing teeth (or implants, if required), so a bridge is formed. It should function just as well as your natural teeth.

Dental bridges replace missing teeth. They can restore chewing function, enhance your appearance and improve your oral health. A dental bridge consists of crowns (that fit over your natural teeth on either side of the space) and artificial teeth (that “bridge the gap” in your smile).

A bridge, also called a fixed bridge or a fixed dental prosthesis, is a dental restoration that replaces one or more missing teeth. It extends across an area that has no teeth and is typically made up of an artificial tooth fused between 2 crowns. (A crown is a hollow, artificial tooth that fits over a natural tooth or a dental implant).

The usual procedure involves placing a crown on the teeth on each side of the gap. These crowns are joined together by another crown that acts as a false tooth. You will need more than one appointment to get a dental bridge. Your dentist or dental practitioner will examine your mouth and treat any tooth decay or gum disease.

What is a dental bridge & how does it work?A dental bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth by filling in a gap with a false tooth called a pontic. The bridge is typically created by placing crowns on the natural teeth on both sides of the missing space. These are called the abutment teeth. The pontic is bonded to the abutments and cemented in place.
What is a traditional dental bridge?A traditional dental bridge consists of a false tooth or teeth being held in place by dental crowns that have been cemented onto each of the abutment teeth. A traditional bridge is the most popular type of dental bridge and can be used when you have natural teeth on both sides of the gap created by your missing tooth.
What are the benefits of a dental bridge?Dental bridges can: Offer a natural-looking solution for tooth loss. Restore chewing and speech function (missing teeth can make it difficult to eat or speak properly). Prevent neighboring teeth from shifting into the gap left behind by missing teeth.
What are dental bridges made of?Also known as fixed partial dentures, dental bridges are made up of two main components: Abutments — Adjacent teeth that support the bridge; they may be your natural teeth or dental implants. Bridges usually have abutments on either side of the missing teeth. Pontics — Artificial teeth that bridge the gap between the abutments.
