  2. In the summer of 1928, heavy rainfall raised Lake Okeechobee’s water level three feet above normal. And in the fall, a hurricane smashed the coast of Florida. The impact flooded Lake Okeechobee. This inland flood obliterated 21 miles of the 47-mile earthen and an estimated 2,500 people died in Southern Florida, most of them migrant farm workers.

The Great Hurricane of 1928 swept over Florida, going through Fort Pierce, Palm Beach, and all the way out to Lake Okeechobee. All of the rain from the category 4 storm flooded Lake Okeechobee, destroying its small dirt dike, resulting in towns like Belle Glade and Pahokee being completely washed away.

When the storm made landfall in Palm Beach County on Sept. 16, 1928, thousands were killed, the majority drowning in the flood waters of Lake Okeechobee, and the victims were disproportionately African Americans and Bahamians who lived near the lake. The ground was flooded for weeks and made burial of victims impossible, Robert says.
