    Complications

    • They develop if one of the glands in the eyes becomes blocked.
    • Warm compress can help relieve the symptoms but some rare cases require surgical removal.

    Preseptal Cellulitis

    • If the infection spreads to the nearby tissues around the eye this can cause preseptal cellulitis.

What is a stye on your eyelid?
A stye happens when one of the glands along your eyelid is clogged and irritated, just like when a skin gland on your face becomes a pimple. People usually have styes on just one eyelid, but you can have them in both eyes at the same time. A stye may be a one-time thing, or it may come back.

Can one have a stye on their eyeball?
No, you cannot have a stye on your eyeball. A stye is a blocked oil gland in the eyelid, and it cannot form on the eyeball itself. However, a stye can sometimes grow close enough to the eyeball that it can cause pain and discomfort. If you have a stye that is close to your eyeball, it is important to see a doctor to make sure that it is not causing any damage to your eye.

    What causes eye styes?
Most styes are caused by a staph infection. When the oil glands in the eyelids get clogged by dead skin, dirt or makeup, bacteria like staph can get trapped inside and cause an infection. Demodex mites can also cause them by carrying bacteria into the oil glands or, in large numbers, damaging and blocking them.

Where do eye styes come from?
Although styes can appear anywhere on the eyelid, they are more likely to form near the edge of the eye, where the eyelashes meet the eyelid. Styes generally aren’t severe medical conditions, despite the pain. They’re common and typically resolve with self-care. However, some styes may require professional medical care.
