What is thematic analysis?Published on September 6, 2019 by Jack Caulfield . Revised on June 22, 2023. Thematic analysis is a method of analyzing qualitative data. It is usually applied to a set of texts, such as an interview or transcripts. The researcher closely examines the data to identify common themes – topics, ideas and patterns of meaning that come up repeatedly.
What are the 5 steps of thematic analysis? The most common method of thematic analysis follows a 5 or 6 step process:1) familiarization; 2) coding; 3) generating themes; 4) reviewing themes; 5) defining and naming themes; and 6) reporting. These steps were defined by Braun & Clarke (2008) in this articlewhich is paywalled.
What are the different approaches to thematic analysis?Broadly speaking, there are two overarching approaches to thematic analysis: inductive and deductive. The approach you take will depend on what is most suitable in light of your research aims and questions. Let’s have a look at the options. The inductive approach involves deriving meaning and creating themes from data without any preconceptions.
What makes a good thematic analysis? As the example illustrates, the hallmark of an effectively developed thematic analysis involves making clear linkages between the overarching theme (e.g., Importance of Clinical Practice) and secondary themes that substantiate, strengthen, and further illuminate it.
