Dysplasia is an abnormal growth containing abnormal cells within the body tissue or organ. It is a pre-cancerous growth. Some of examples are oral and cervical dysplasia. The risk factors for developing dysplasia are smoking, drinking alcohol, and chewing betel nuts containing tobacco. Other causes are human papillomavirus infection and exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun. Early diagnosis and treatment help in reducing the risk of dysplasia turning into cancerous growth.
