Temporal arteritis (also called giant cell arteritis) is a condition of unknown cause that affects older adults and causes inflammation of major blood vessels. It should be suspected in an older adult (age 50 or over) when the following symptoms are present: • A new headache or a change in headache • Jaw pain that recurs or worsens with chewing • Sudden visual changes, especially vision loss in one eye • Unexplained fever, weight loss, or fatigue • Pain to the touch in the area of the temporal artery (on the side of the head just in front of the ear) • Vascular abnormalities, such as unequal pulses in the arms, limb pain with exercise, different blood pressure readings in the two arms, or unequal pulses in the temporal arteries These symptoms and signs should especially raise concern regarding the possibility of temporal arteritis if a blood test that measures inflammation, such as the C-reactive protein or erythrocyte sedimentation rate, is elevated. These symptoms along with polymyalgia rheumatica (a type of arthritis, bursitis and tendonitis of the shoulders and hips) would also raise the likelihood of temporal arteritis.
