    • According to 2 sources
Rifled firearms date back to at least the 15th century.
The origins of rifling are difficult to trace, but some of the earliest European experiments seem to have been carried out during the 15th century. Archers had long realized that a twist added to the tail feathers of their arrows gave them greater accuracy.

When was rifling invented?Rifling is a relatively new force in firearms manufacturing. Remember, the first recorded use of a firearm was in 1364, though primitive artillery predated that by several decades. Rifled barrels weren’t invented for another 134 years, and it took 350 years from that date for rifling to become widespread. That was only 160-odd years ago.
Where did rifling come from?According to The Gun and its Development, one was Gaspard Kollner of Vienna, sometime in the 15th century, others allege that his grooves were straight in nature and the first spiral grooves came from Augustus Kotter of Nuremberg in 1520. Regardless, a lot of the early rifling development came from German speaking areas.
When was barrel rifling invented?According to most sources barrel rifling was invented near the end of the fifteenth century in Augsburg, Germany. For nearly two centuries rifling was uncommon and not found on every rifle. And in fact, rifling did not become commonplace until the nineteenth century. ( Wikipedia and other sources)
How did rifling work?An early method of introducing rifling to a pre-drilled barrel was to use a cutter mounted on a square-section rod, accurately twisted into a spiral of the desired pitch, mounted in two fixed square-section holes. As the cutter was advanced through the barrel it twisted at a uniform rate governed by the pitch. The first cut was shallow.
