  2. In English, a viand is an item of food, particularly a choice or tasty dish. In the Philippines, the word has served as a translation for the native Tagalog word ulam, which refers to the main food at a meal that’s accompanied by rice.

What does 'viand' mean?I'm not sure ulam has close direct translation. "Viand" can simply mean a choice dish but from how my friends speak, ulam can mean the main dish, or simply an accompaniment to rice, or even anything that is not rice.
Should Filipinos stop using the word 'viand'?Unfortunately "viand" is probably the closest, but "viand" is antiquated and the Philippines is the only place where it is in comparatively widespread use. Filipinos should really stop using that word and just say dish or main dish if there's a variety, since I've never heard any English-speaking person use the word 'viand' before either.
Where does vyaund come from? From Middle English vyaund, from Anglo-Norman and Old French viande, from Late Latin *vivanda, from Latin vīvenda, from the verb vīvō (“I live”). Compare victual . The Philippines usage is an anglicization of Spanish vianda (which is ultimately from Latin via French), which is used to translate ulam in Tagalog. See also usage notes.
