What does rifling mean?It is also the term (as a verb) for creating such grooves. Rifling is measured in twist rate, the distance the rifling takes to complete one full revolution, expressed as a ratio with 1 as its base (e.g., 1:10 inches (25 cm)).

What is rifling & why is it important?Rifling is one of the most important innovations in firearms technology. Rifling takes the form of one or more lands and grooves of differing widths, profiles, arrangements and twist (turn) rates. The spiral depressions in the bore surface between the lands are called grooves; the lands are projections on the bore surface between the grooves.
How does a rifling work?To achieve this with a firearm, manufacturers put spiral grooves on the inside of the barrel (a process called rifling); as the bullet travels down the bore, these grooves cause it to rotate. The twist rate of the rifling in a particular barrel is generally expressed by how far down the barrel the rifling extends to make a single revolution.
