In most women, the period flow gets lighter and shorter after the age of 40 years, which is normal and this is the sign of nearing menopause or stoppage of the menstrual cycle. This stage of transition to attain menopause is known as perimenopause. It is normal to have skipped menstrual cycle and also for periods to stop in 3 days in a lady who is more than 40 years. This happens as a consequence of perimenopause, where there is an altered flow and duration of periods in most women, where periods get lighter in the beginning few years, and then eventually stop to attain menopause. If the flow is unusually painful, then it will need proper medical attention and care. The other signs of perimenopause are hot flashes, extreme fatigue, vaginal dryness, and altered mood swings. Perimenopause can be for a duration of several months up to 7 to 10 years in a few women.
